H i s t o r y

After much consultation and planning, our school opened its doors in August 1993 with Mrs. Olive Hyatt serving as the first principal and teacher. During the first year, sixteen parents entrusted the education of their kindergarten and first grade children to the Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School. The name was changed in 1997 to William A. Kirlew Junior Academy to honor Pastor Kirlew for his dedicated service to the church. At the request of parents, the school was extended to eighth grade in August of 1994.

Mrs. Hyatt retired in 1995, and Mrs. Myrna Alexander served as principal the following year. She was succeeded by Mrs. Claudette Harding, the current principal.

Over its years of existence, WAKJA has established a reputation of excellence and has created an atmosphere of achievement. Most of the graduates have gone on to do extremely well in high school and college, both public and private. Our school has also been able to forge a comfortable working relationship with the church and members of the community.

The school into a new building August 1, 2006; representing the completion of Phase 1 of a 3 Phase project.

This school was established in keeping with the Seventh-day Adventist philosophy which states that "education is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers."
